21-year-old arrested, paraded with his accomplices for staging his own abduction in Enugu

On May 24, 2025, at around 1pm, Enugu State Police Command officers affiliated with the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad’s Nsukka Sector detained four male suspects for conspiracy, staged kidnapping, and scamming the parents of a staged kidnapping victim out of N2,000,000.00.

The suspects include 21-year-old Chidera Godwin Ako, who planned his own kidnapping; 19-year-old Okechukwu Philip Chidalu; 20-year-old Ifeanyi Ugwu; and 35-year-old Ossai Chigozie, who was just released from the Nigerian Correctional Service prison. Two live ammunition and a single-barrel firearm manufactured locally were found on the suspects.

According to a police inquiry, Chidera went missing on May 4, 2025. On May 21, 2025, his associates used his phone to send a video of him chained, looking beaten, and brandishing the recovered gun at his parents in order to demand a N10,000.00.00 ransom.

On May 22, 2025, the parents begged for his release and deposited N1,500,000.00 into a designated account; nevertheless, the suspects refused to free him.

Following another N500,000.00 payment, Chidera and his associates were quickly taken into custody by police officers at a point-of-sale facility when they attempted to take out the money. After the investigations are finished, the suspects who admitted to the crime will be arraigned.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident to reporters. He stated that CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, the Commissioner of Police, has ordered more arrests of anyone connected to the crime, although calling the illegal act regrettable.

He stressed that some cases, like this one, may be staged and advised the public to report suspected kidnappings right once and refrain from making rash ransom payments.
