The Kano State Joint Task Force Committee on Security Restoration and Youth Rehabilitation has ramped up efforts to combat drug abuse and street violence, arresting 31 individuals during a series of coordinated raids in key locations across the state.
Between May 10 and May 14, the task force carried out targeted operations in known trouble spots such as Dorayi, Ja’in, Sharada, Unguwar Dabai, Dukawa, Kabuga, Kofar Mata, and nearby neighborhoods.
Following the sweep, the committee’s chairman, Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar Mata, highlighted the broader objective behind the initiative.
“Creating a drug-free and peaceful Kano is our mission,” he said. “We are determined to clean up Kano’s streets and give our youths a chance at rehabilitation.”
The intelligence-driven raids led to the apprehension of 25 suspected street gang members and six individuals believed to be involved in drug trafficking.
Items seized during the operation included four locally made guns, nine sharp weapons such as knives and cutlasses, three wooden clubs (gora), three and a half parcels of suspected cannabis, 173 suspected exol pills, and other illegal substances.
Among those arrested were several individuals identified by security officials as well-known gang members in Dorayi Quarters. These included Dan Abba, Bola, Baka Kashi, Ramos, Abba Maciji, and Abdul Baki figures believed to have played major roles in the ongoing unrest in the area.
“This operation has struck at the heart of criminal activities in Dorayi and its environs,” he said. “The identification and arrest of these individuals, some of whom are known to have terrorized their neighborhoods for years, marks a turning point in our fight against insecurity and youth involvement in violent crimes.”
The 25 individuals arrested have been formally charged and are now in custody under the jurisdiction of Magistrate Court Number 16, located along Zungeru Road in Kano. Meanwhile, six others suspected of drug-related offenses including a well-known dealer identified as Rabi’u Hamza have been transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for continued investigation and legal action.
Dr. Kofar Mata voiced confidence that the crackdown would contribute significantly to restoring enduring peace in neighborhoods plagued by youth-driven unrest.
“There is no doubt that the removal of these elements from Dorayi will help bring an end to thuggery-related violence that has plagued the area for more than two decades,” he said.
He reaffirmed the task force’s commitment to sustaining the momentum of the security operations.
“Our mission is clear to create a drug-free, secure, and peaceful environment for all citizens of Kano State,” he stated.
“We remain steadfast and resolute in our efforts. The committee, which brings together security agencies and government functionaries, is committed to restoring peace to Kano communities.”
The task force says more operations will follow in other parts of the state as part of a broader campaign to rehabilitate youtha and create a responsible generation.
