The Abia State government has recognized the efforts of two former members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who served in the state, commending them for addressing unemployment and initiating health campaigns against infectious diseases in their host communities.

The honorees, Owums Francis Chimaobim, an Information Technologist, and Dr. Ngene Joseph Ekene, a Medical Doctor, were celebrated by Governor Alex Otti for their outstanding service.

Chimaobim received accolades for empowering widows through business training and supporting youth entrepreneurship in Umuawa Alaocha community. Meanwhile, Dr. Ekene was acknowledged for organizing health screenings for HIV, Syphilis, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B and C, and for facilitating a safe childbirth for a pregnant woman in Uzuakoli.

The state government noted that Chimaobim’s initiatives in job creation not only provided alternatives to crime but also helped lift young people out of poverty.

During the presentation of the certificates of recognition, Abia State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Gladys Adama, praised both ex-Corps members for dedicating their time and personal resources to fighting unemployment and combating viral illnesses in rural areas.

In addition to the certificates, Mrs. Adama presented cash gifts on behalf of Governor Alex Otti and urged all Corps members currently serving in the state to make meaningful contributions to the development of their host communities.

In his response, Chimaobim encouraged young Nigerians to rise above poverty and economic hardship by acquiring practical skills.

He further advised youths to reject criminal activity and take advantage of transformative job opportunities, stressing that the responsibility of job creation should not rest solely on the government.
