ISWAP kills 23 farmers, kidnaps 18 others

At least 23 farmers and fishermen lost their lives in an attack carried out by fighters from the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Malam Karanti, a village located near Baga in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday morning, roughly five kilometers from the town of Baga.

According to reports, the attackers rounded up several individuals mostly farmers and fishermen near the village and executed 23 of them.

“The terrorists spared an elderly man, who later alerted the community. The terrorists assembled people in Malam Karanti and killed them. Most of the victims were bean farmers,” a source told newsmen.

Attempts by locals to retrieve the bodies of the victims were thwarted when ISWAP militants launched a follow-up assault, forcing the community to abandon recovery efforts.

“We tried to organise a rescue mission with security agencies to recover the victims’ bodies, but the terrorists returned and prevented us. Many families are waiting for their loved ones,” another source said.

Malam Karanti is known to lie within ISWAP-controlled territory, yet civilians continue to engage in farming and fishing there despite the danger.

In response to the ongoing threat, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, assured residents of Borno State and the wider North-East region that the military is actively working to dismantle terrorist strongholds and restore peace.

He stated that the armed forces are working alongside allied nations such as Russia and France to deploy advanced military hardware aimed at swiftly ending the conflict.

According to him, recharging Lake Chad is also a strategic move, as it would enhance military mobility in the region and allow troops to target ISWAP fighters who have been exploiting the Chad Basin’s economic activities like farming and fishing to support their operations.
