Joseph Owoputi, the recently appointed Abia State Commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), revealed that the Command had detained 65 individuals between June and August 2025 and seized around 82 kilograms of narcotics from them.
Owoputi revealed that twelve of the detained individuals are presently awaiting prosecution, adding that his Command obtained seven convictions during the reviewed time.
When he led a group of representatives from his Command to meet Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Wednesday, he made this statement.
Thirty-eight additional people are receiving counseling and rehabilitation at the Command’s facility, according to the new NDLEA Commandant.
Owoputi asked the state government for help in equipping them with operating vehicles for more effective performance and promised the Abia Governor that he would build on the accomplishments of his predecessor.
He also expressed gratitude to the governor of Abia for helping the previous NDLEA commandant in Abia, which he claimed helped the agency combat drug misuse and illegal drug trafficking.
In response to the new Abia NDLEA chief’s request, Governor Alex Otti authorized two new Hilux vans for the organization and gave the Abia State government instructions to retrieve and repair the NDLEA’s abandoned cars.
Otti lamented the fact that drug usage is ruining many young people, particularly students, and urged Nigeria to enact stricter laws against drug abuse and illegal drug sellers.
