Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has firmly stated that Iran is not interested in direct negotiations with the United States regarding its nuclear program. He dismissed the idea as “meaningless,” as tensions between the two nations continue to escalate.
Araghchi’s comments were included in a statement released on Sunday, following remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump the previous month. In a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Trump expressed hope for negotiations to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
In the past week, Trump escalated tensions by threatening that “if they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing.”
Araghchi questioned the sincerity of the U.S. call for negotiations, asking, “If you want negotiations, then what is the point of threatening?”
While Tehran maintains that it is not seeking nuclear weapons, it has expressed openness to indirect diplomacy. Araghchi emphasized that Iran desires to negotiate on “equal footing” with the U.S., which he criticized for continuously threatening the use of force in violation of the UN Charter and issuing conflicting statements from various officials.
