Actress Mary Njoku raises alarm over fake drugs circulating in Nigeria

Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mary Remmy Njoku has expressed serious concerns about the effectiveness of some medications available in Nigeria, following a troubling health incident she experienced while on a movie set.

Taking to Instagram, Njoku shared her suspicion that counterfeit or substandard drugs may be in circulation across the country.

She described how she had purchased Imodium—a medication commonly used to manage diarrhea—from a well-known pharmacy in Nigeria. Despite using it consistently over a three-day period, her condition showed no signs of improvement.

Interestingly, she noted that her symptoms subsided almost immediately after her husband gave her the same medication, which he had bought from outside the country.

Troubled by the stark difference in results, the actress and mother of three urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to urgently investigate the matter and ensure the safety and quality of medicines sold within Nigeria.

She said, “I want to share a recent experience: I had food poisoning on a set and sent a staff member to buy Imodium from a well-known pharmacy chain in Nigeria.

“A medication I’ve used many times before. I took it for about three days but my symptoms persisted.
“Then my husband bought a tiny tablet of the same Imodium from abroad and after taking it, my stomach issues subsided within just five minutes.

“This isn’t the first time I have noticed a difference. So I have to ask: What exactly are we being sold in Nigeria? What’s going on with our drugs?

“This is a public health risk and NAFDAC must take it seriously. This is very dangerous.”
