AFCON 2025: Top five best players revealed ahead quarterfinals

The 2025 African Cup of Nations, AFCON has met expectations, with numerous sides demonstrating strong and impressive performances thus far.

Meanwhile, it was much easier to celebrate victories in the group stage, which saw 87 goals scored.

As the tournament progressed to the round of 16, the participating teams grew more focused and made fewer mistakes.

Because of this, only 22 goals were scored in total.

There are now eight teams contending for the prize. In the latter phases of games, a number of players put on amazing performances that helped their country advance to the quarterfinals.

Sportskeeda has named the top five players who performed best in the AFCON 2025 round of 16, with Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman as the tournament’s finest performer thus far.

Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz is fifth, Egypt’s Yasser Ibrahim is fourth, Manchester United’s Amad Diallo from the Ivory Coast is third, Senegal’s Papa Gueye is second, and Lookman is seen as the greatest overall.

Diaz has always helped Morocco get out of difficult situations. The Real Madrid player scored the game’s solitary goal, effectively ending Tanzania’s aspirations at AFCON 2025.

Diaz has scored in every game of the tournament and is currently the leading goal scorer in AFCON 2025.

Ibrahim, an Egyptian player, was a standout performer in the African Cup of Nations’ round of 16.The defender performed admirably in defense as Egypt defeated Benin Republic 3-1 in extra time. He subsequently scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute to put Egypt ahead of Benin.

Amad Diallo of Ivory Coast scored the first goal and set up the second in his country’s 3-0 victory over Burkina Faso. With three goals already, he has established himself as the tournament’s leading goal scorer.

Papa Gueye of Senegal scored two goals to help his team recover from a difficult start, leading Senegal to a 3-1 victory over Sudan in the round of 16.

Ademola Lookman of Nigeria was arguably the best player in the recently completed set of matches.

The winger took control of the game in attack, scoring Nigeria’s opening goal against Mozambique in the 20th minute.

He also contributed two more assists, one in the 47th and one in the 75th minutes. A performance that has propelled him to the top of the AFCON 2025 assists list, with four.
