Bassey Nyong Uweh, 32, of Akwa Ibom State, has been taken into custody by the Edo State Police Command on suspicion of kidnapping and murdering his boss there.
According to the ZINGTIE, Moses Yamu, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, gave reporters in Benin City confirmation of this on Monday.
According to Yamu, the suspect was apprehended at a creek in the village of Eyo Abasi in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, by the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad using technicality.
He claimed that after earning over N900,000 from the sale of pineapple that was gathered from the farmer’s property, Bassey Nyong Uweh, one of the five-man gang, abducted and murdered 59-year-old Henry Ohiengbomwan.
He said that the event took place in Igueze village, which is located in the State’s Ovia North East Local Government Area on the Benin-Lagos road.
According to the picture maker for the Command, the suspect guided agents to the forest where the body was interred in a shallow grave.
He stated that the deceased had hired the suspect and four other people who are currently at large to work on his farm.
He claimed that after the deceased sold pineapple that they had assisted him in harvesting, the suspects plotted to kidnap him.
However, Yamu promised that an investigation is underway to apprehend and prosecute the four other fugitives.
However, ZINGTIE discovered that three of the suspects are from Nasarawa State, while two are from Akwa Ibom State.
According to a family member who spoke to reporters, the deceased was a farmer in Benin who owned many acres of yam, pineapple, cocoa, and melon in his neighborhood.
According to him, the farmer hired five laborers who receive a monthly salary to work on his farm.
“The deceased on May 13, 2025, went to his farm in company of his five workers to harvest pineapple and sold the produce for over N900,000.
“The labourers after the sale, kidnapped their employer in the forest, collected the N900,000, killed and buried him in a shallow grave.
“After the kidnapping, they reportedly called the deceased family, demanding a ransom of N60 million to effect his release but the family requested to speak with the deceased before paying ransom.
“The suspects reportedly demanded for N300,000 from them to have an audience with the deceased but didn’t allow them despite receiving the money paid by one of the deceased’s brothers.
“This development, however, made the family members suspect that the deceased wasn’t alive and reported the incident to the police.
“At the time of negotiating ransom with the suspects, the family of the deceased were not aware that they had already killed and buried him. the killers fled the community to evade arrest”, he said.
