Adebayo Adelabu, Nigeria’s Minister of Power, is exiting President Bola Tinubu’s administration without having met the electricity supply goal of 6000 megawatts.

All ministers, aides, and political appointees working for the President who were seeking elective positions in the 2027 general election were ordered to submit their resignations by March 31, 2026.

The action was consistent with the country’s recently ratified Electoral Act.

Among those appointed is Adelabu, who has announced his intention to compete for the governorship of Oyo State.

As a result of Tinubu’s recent directive, Adelabu has under two weeks to step down from his governmental role.

ZINGTIE reached out to Bolaji Tunji, who serves as Adelabu’s spokesperson, in order to obtain his response regarding the issue. However, at the time this report was filed, he had not yet returned calls or text messages.

A trustworthy source in the Ministry of Power verified that the minister would step down before Tinubu’s deadline.

“He (Adelabu) is ready to bow out; I can authoritatively tell you this. His immediate goal is the Oyo Governorship 2027,” the source said.

The source states that multiple individuals are already competing for Adelabu’s role. He cautioned, though, that whoever Tinubu selects will have a heavy workload due to the profound crisis in the nation’s power sector.

Adelabu would leave Tinubu’s presidency without having met his self-set goal of supplying 6,000 megawatts of electricity.

As of Tuesday, the electricity supply from the national grid allocated to Discos was 3,331 MW.

Nigerians have experienced ongoing blackouts and an unreliable power supply across the country in recent months.

Gas shortages were blamed by the Nigerian Integrated System Operator and electricity distribution companies, resulting in their struggle with 2,000 to 3,900 megawatts.

Nigeria’s power generation companies halted operations at several gas plants on Tuesday due to ongoing legacy debts in the power sector that exceed N6.8 trillion.

Adelabu aimed to provide Nigeria with 6000 MW of electricity. But his 2025 target has already been missed.
