2026 World Cup: IOC Takes Position on Complaint Targeting FIFA President

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has declined to pursue an ethics complaint filed against FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

The petition was submitted by FairSquare, a human rights advocacy organisation.

According to FairSquare, Infantino allegedly violated principles requiring political neutrality, particularly in relation to U.S. President Donald Trump.

The group’s allegations included the controversial decision to allow U.S. forward Folarin Balogun to remain on the pitch after receiving only a yellow card during a World Cup match, as well as the reported presentation of a FIFA peace prize to Trump.

However, the IOC announced on Friday that it would not open a formal investigation or institute disciplinary measures against the FIFA president over the allegations.

In their statement, they explained, “The complaint mainly deals with how an international sports federation runs its operations, its ties with governments, and decisions about following competition rules—things that are not covered by the IOC’s Ethics Code.”
