In Umummeje, Osisioma LGA of Abia State, a warehouse containing expired foreign medications and other supplements has been shut by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, or NAFDAC.

This comes as the primary suspect in the phony drug trade has escaped to an unidentified location in order to avoid being apprehended.

Martins Iluyomade, the South East zonal coordinator for NAFDAC, led the operation that discovered the illicit drug warehouse and made the announcement on Tuesday.

The owner of the warehouse either bought expired medications to repackage them or obtained them from importers before distributing the unwholesome pills to innocent members of the public, according to Iluyomade, who said that the warehouse was crammed full of expired foreign pharmaceutical products.

The NAFDAC zonal coordinator revealed that the rooms were crammed with counterfeit and expired foreign medications and that a specialized equipment used by the suspect to repackage and rebrand the expired items was found in the building.

He stated that while his office is working to capture the primary suspect who has gone into hiding, the operation, which was coordinated with members of the Nigeria Army, DSS, Police, and other sister agencies, resulted in the arrest of several suspects.

He voiced worry at the activities of persons who sell fraudulent and expired products to the public, which he said is responsible for the rising cases of kidney and other essential human organs.

Iluyomade expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti and the Presidency for their support of NAFDAC’s mission against fake and expired products.
