Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has granted a pardon to 40 prison inmates, showcasing his commitment to justice reform and rehabilitation. This move is aimed at reintegrating convicts into society.

According to the state’s attorney general and commissioner for justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the pardon highlights the governor’s dedication to mercy and rehabilitation.

The pardons, recommended by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, include the outright release of 15 convicts, effective January 12, 2025. Additionally, several death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment, while other inmates received significant sentence reductions.

Dr. Ajulo explained that these decisions were informed by careful deliberations, considering factors such as the nature of offenses, inmates’ age, health, behavior, and duration of incarceration.

This compassionate gesture coincides with Governor Aiyedatiwa’s 60th birthday and marks a significant occasion with an act of grace. Notably, the governor chose to forgo birthday celebrations in honor of the late Secretary to the State Government, Tayo Oluwatuyi.

The governor’s act of mercy is empowered by Section 212 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which grants state governors the prerogative of mercy.

The Advisory Council’s recommendations were informed by insights from correctional authorities, legal experts, and respected community leaders, ensuring fairness and compassion in the decision-making process.
