The suspended Senator for Kogi Central Senatorial District, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, appeared at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama, Abuja.
She is set to face arraignment over charges of defamation.
Akpoti arrived at the court around 10:30 a.m., prior to the start of proceedings.
The charge, brought by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Mohammed Abubakar, represents the Federal Government’s case against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In the criminal case, numbered CR/297/25, the government accuses the senator, who is the only defendant, of making defamatory remarks against Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a live television appearance.
The charge identifies Senate President Akpabio and former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, as the nominal complainants.
It claims that the senator alleged that Bello collaborated with Akpabio to plan her assassination near Abuja, disguising it as an attack by a mob or local group.
According to the Federal Government, these statements were made on April 3, 2025, during a live episode of Channels Television’s Politics Today.
The government contends that Akpoti-Uduaghan deliberately or recklessly made these statements, knowing they could damage the reputations of those involved.
She is alleged to have said, “Let’s ask the Senate President why in the first instance did he withdraw my security, if not to make me vulnerable to attacks?
“He then emphasised that I should be killed, but I should be killed in Kogi. What is important to me is to stay alive because dead men tell no tales. Who is going to get justice for me?”
