Akume vs Alia: APC stakeholders give Benue governor condition for peace

Conditions have been set by the Benue State All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders to support Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.

The parties involved pledged to oppose Alia until the governor acknowledged Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), as the leader of the party in the state.

This occurs amid the party’s internal leadership crisis.

According to ZINGTIE, the conflict arose from Governor Alia and former state governor Akume’s battle for dominance of the party’s structure in the state.

Over the weekend, the crisis took a new turn when security personnel confronted the State APC leadership, led by the party’s embattled chairman, Comrade Austin Agada, and other stakeholders.

The stakeholders had insisted on going forward with the planned meeting to welcome Dr. Matthias Byuan, whom the federal government had recently appointed through Akume’s assistance.

This occurred in contravention of the state governor’s order, which forbade political meetings due to safety concerns.

But all of the participants in the Monday morning meeting that concluded at the SGF’s Makurdi home decided to keep lining up behind the Akume as the party’s leader in the state.

Speaking to the stakeholders at the meeting, Byuan conveyed his dissatisfaction with Alia, saying that the governor had gone on television to accuse him and other party members of being behind the Friday physical violence at the party office.

He clarified, saying, “I was just coming home to show you (stakeholders) the letter of the appointment that the SGF facilitated for me.

“We were driving straight to the party office when some youths came and fought us, but our youths overpowered them and entered the secretariat before police started to shoot tear gas.”
