Allegations of ceremonial practices involving the remains of a python allegedly buried within the village have caused tension in Opu-Nembe Kingdom in the Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
A unusual swarm of bees swarmed the town square, sparking a debate that locals saw as a spiritual warning brought on by the breaking of a sacred taboo.
According to community accounts, elders sought answers from traditional medicine men after the bees’ unexpected and unexplained appearance was interpreted as a negative omen.
Pythons are revered animals in Nembe culture, and it is strictly forbidden to kill them. The conduct of complex burial ceremonies for the deceased reptile is one of the harsh customary penalties allegedly meted out to violators. It is also forbidden to employ Python components for any reason.
Traditionalists allegedly linked the spiritual disturbance to the community’s purported burial of python remains, which has alarmed and unsettled the inhabitants, according to worried residents.
Additionally, it was learned that the offenders had been given six days to acknowledge their involvement or suffer the customary penalties.
