The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), under the leadership of Simon Ekpa, has urged U.S. lawmakers in Washington to halt the supply of weapons to Nigeria.
This appeal was made by the group’s Acting Prime Minister, Ogechukwu Nkere, who cited alleged violations of human rights.
The two prominent Biafra figures, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Simon Ekpa, are both currently being held in custody.
Ekpa has reportedly been sentenced in Finland, while Kanu is still facing trial before a Federal High Court in Abuja.
In a statement released on Monday, Nkere revealed that he met with Congressman Brian Mast (Republican, Florida), the Chair of the House Armed Services Committee, and Congresswoman Lamonica McIver (Democrat-New Jersey) during the first half of September 2025. The aim of the meeting was to push for a suspension of arms transfers to Nigeria.
Nkere argued that the move was warranted due to reported human rights violations occurring in the South East, including the continued imprisonment of Kanu, the head of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
He also mentioned that he consulted the legislators on possible actions the U.S. could take in response to what he described as Finland’s actions against Ekpa.
Following Ekpa’s incarceration, Nkere said he stepped in to actively oversee the operations of the BRGIE.
“In addition, I met with Ambassador Tibor Nagy, longtime senior State Department official and diplomat with extensive postings in Africa.
“In the meetings, I encouraged U.S. strategic engagement with BRGIE on the Biafra issue, as well as encouraging the US Congress to pause arms sales to Nigeria”, he stated.
He highlighted human rights abuses against Biafrans, including the manner of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s rendition to Nigeria and recommended that the US secure his release.
Nkere also sought the US government’s support in addressing what he called Finland’s “persecution and conviction of Simon Ekpa”.
