Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, an Islamic cleric, has urged the federal government to immediately suspend all military cooperation with the United States in response to reported US airstrikes.

Gumi argued that American engagement could exacerbate Nigeria’s security difficulties and jeopardize national sovereignty.

Gumi made the announcement in a Facebook post on Friday.

He stated that while Islam allows for the battle against terrorism, such activities should be carried out with “clean hands,” saying that the United States lacks the moral legitimacy to lead such operations due to its global combat record.

According to the cleric, Nigeria erred by letting foreign forces to participate in its counterterrorism operations, claiming that “terrorists do not truly fight terrorists” and that such interventions frequently end in civilian casualties and concealed political motivations.

Gumi cautioned that enabling Nigeria to become a theatre of conflict will draw anti-US elements, further destabilising the country.

He also warned that US engagement, particularly under the guise of safeguarding Christians, could divide the country along religious lines.

The cleric also stated that airstrikes alone cannot eliminate terrorism, stating that effective counterterrorism necessitates strong ground operations, which Nigeria has adequate personnel to carry out if properly organized.

“This is the mistake Nigeria has made. Terrorists don’t fight terrorists in truth; they may only kill innocent people and have ulterior motives behind the drama of fighting ‘terror’.

“As a principle, no nation should allow its land to be a theater of war. And no nation should allow its neighbors to be their enemies.

“If Nigeria wants military assistance, China, Turkey, and Pakistan can do the job effectively,” part of his statement read.
