The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly rejected a Canadian court’s decision that labeled it and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as terrorist organizations.

The party described the ruling as “misinformed, biased, and lacking in evidence,” calling for its outright dismissal.

Similarly, former Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, criticized the court’s verdict, warning of the dangerous precedent it sets.

Soneye described the ruling as a political earthquake with potential consequences extending far beyond Canada’s borders. He cautioned that if democratic nations fail to resist such judicial overreach, their own political affairs could eventually face judgment in foreign courts.

Reports indicate that the Federal Court of Canada upheld a decision classifying Nigeria’s APC and PDP as terrorist groups, denying asylum to former member Douglas Egharevba due to his decade-long ties with both parties.

Justice Phuong Ngo, in a judgment issued on June 17, 2025, dismissed Egharevba’s request for judicial review after the Immigration Appeal Division found him inadmissible under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

In response, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor emphasized that both Nigeria and Canada are democratic nations.

“And I’m sure those who make such statements enjoy their right to freedom of speech. But again, when having freedom of speech, one should be circumspect about unguarded and unnecessary statements.

“There’s nothing to show, there’s nothing on text to show that even the malfunctioning APC is a terrorist organisation or the PDP, which is a credible institution.

“If they wanted to say that some individuals in the government, particularly the APC government, have traces to terrorism, like we all are aware where the last Boko Haram leader was caught in one of the prominent members of this government’s apartment house, they will have a case,” he said.
