A suspected female member of a “one-chance” gang was severely beaten by an enraged mob on Wednesday in the Idogbo bypass area of the Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to information obtained by ZINTGTIE, the suspect was a member of a gang that focused on stealing passengers on commercial buses.

Members of the one chance gang typically pretend to be cab drivers or passengers on commercial buses.

They are said to specialize in tricking unwary travelers into getting inside their car so they can steal their possessions.

However, it was also learned that the gang’s luck ran out when one of their victims, who recognized the female suspect, raised the alarm at the Benin-Sapele road axis of the bypass.

According to reports, the alarm caught the attention of onlookers and drivers, who pursued the suspects’ car vigorously.

After a fierce pursuit by onlookers and drivers, the group abandoned their car and ran away in several directions, according to an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity.

According to the informant, a female suspect was quickly caught and severely beaten after the gang abandoned their car near the Idogbo bypass.

He claimed that after the female suspect was beaten, more irate mobs arrived and set fire to the suspects’ abandoned car.

According to him, “One-chance is an organised crime, perpetrated by people who work together, using a strategy of hailing unsuspecting passengers into their waiting vehicle.

“Once passengers are inside their vehicle, the ‘one-chance’ gang members instruct victims to comply, using coercion and violence.

“They take the victims’ possessions, traumatize and may hurt them physically”, he said.

At the time this story was filed, Moses Yamu, the Public Relation Officer for the Edo State Police Command, had not yet responded to the occurrence.
