APC chieftain criticises Gov Buni over Sunday zonal meeting

Daniel Musa, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State, has blasted Mai Mala Buni, the governor of Yobe State and the APC’s North East zonal coordinator, for holding a crucial party gathering on a Sunday morning—a time customarily associated with Christian devotion.

Musa told reporters in Jalingo on Friday that the North East zonal consultative meeting was scheduled for Sunday, June 15, 2025, at 11 a.m., which he said seemed to marginalize the party’s Christian members.

“This timing is problematic. It clashes with Sunday church services, which is a central aspect of life for Christian members. Such scheduling either reflects a lack of sensitivity or a deliberate exclusion, neither of which is acceptable,” Musa said.

Musa expressed optimism that the date was an error, but cautioned that if it isn’t fixed, it might send “dangerous signals” about the party’s stance on religious balance and inclusivity.

“If it is not corrected immediately, it will suggest that the APC has no regard for its Christian members in the region. That would reinforce the perception that the party is biased, which is not good for our unity or electoral prospects,” he added.

Musa pleaded on the party’s leadership to acknowledge the religious diversity of Nigeria and make sure that political events are planned to accommodate all religions.

He implied a double standard by saying that it would be unimaginable for a similar gathering to be scheduled during Friday Juma’ah prayers.

“The APC is already battling a perception problem as a party for a particular religion. We must be cautious not to validate that view with our actions,” he cautioned.

The APC mainstay urged Governor Buni and the zonal leadership to move the meeting to a more inclusive time so that both Muslim and Christian members may fully participate.
