The Zamfara State House of Assembly’s decision to declare Aliyu Ango-Kagara’s (APC-Talata Mafara South), the party’s minority leader,’ seat vacant has been condemned by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Yusuf Idris, the APC’s spokesman in Zamfara, called the assembly’s action an abuse of power and a calculated effort to undermine the opposition in the legislature in a statement released on Wednesday.

“We consider the assembly’s action as a move to weed out the APC from the state assembly. The declaration of the minority leader’s seat vacant was just for political reasons to silence the opposition in the house,” Idris stated.

With reference to the suspension of eight members of the house in January 2024, the APC further denounced the assembly for what it described as an ongoing crackdown on opposition lawmakers.

“We condemn the assembly in totality. This is coming in addition to the illegal suspension of eight members of the house since January 2024,” the party added.

The APC claims that due process was not followed and that there was no constitutional support for the decision to declare Ango-Kagara’s seat vacant.

“This is very unfortunate that the leadership of the house has been fighting their colleagues who refused to dance to their tunes, especially as rubber stamps,” the statement read.

A threat of legal action was issued by the party against the assembly for allegedly violating the rights of its members.

“We caution the state lawmakers that the matter may lead the APC to approach a court of law for proper interpretation and claim damages,” Idris stated.

The APC also stressed that due process and a fair hearing should be followed in any disciplinary action taken against lawmakers, as opposed to what it called the assembly’s leadership acting in a blinded manner.
