Despite mounting rumors of a planned defection, Rufus Bature, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Plateau State, has explained why Governor Caleb Mutfwang has not been accepted into the party.

A number of political organizations in Plateau State have staged rallies and press conferences in recent days, either vehemently opposing or supporting the governor’s alleged switch to the APC.

The notion has been publicly rejected by prominent APC figures in the state, including Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, national chairperson.

Governor Mutfwang has consistently refuted claims that he has changed parties. Rather, he asserts that APC members have been pressuring him to join.

Speaking on the subject, Bature stated that the governor must adhere to the same protocols as anyone wishing to defect.

“The governor should follow the proper channel. Let him consult with the leaders of the party first. We have leaders at the national level, he should meet with them,” he said.

He says that joining the party necessitates dialogue and consensus.

“There must be negotiations, give-and-take, for us to accept him. Let him come in a proper way. That is all we are saying.”

The APC must comprehend the governor’s goals, Bature continued.

“Politics is about dialogue and negotiations. If the terms and conditions are good for the party, they will accept him. But if we don’t know his intentions for coming into the party, that is where the issue arises,” he explained.

“That is why you see groups speaking from different quarters, either for or against his defection.”

As of the time this article was filed, Mutfwang had not personally notified the APC national chairman of any decision to join, aside from the terms allegedly established for him.
