As tensions in the Middle East rise, the Federal Government has begun evacuating Nigerians wanting to depart Iran, providing them with an escorted passage across the Armenian border to guarantee their safety.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), revealed the development on Tuesday in a post on her X account.

She stated that the process of evacuation is being coordinated by officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, and they are providing assistance to Nigerians who wish to leave the country.

The evacuees are being guided to the Armenian border, where provisions have been established to ensure their safe transit.

With worries mounting about the security situation in the region after the U.S. and Israel carried out coordinated military strikes on Iran on February 28, the evacuation comes.

The strikes are said to have sparked retaliatory missile and drone assaults in various areas of the Middle East, escalating concerns about a wider regional war.

Dabiri-Erewa provided reassurance that, despite the escalating tension, no Nigerians in Iran have been impacted by the ongoing hostilities.

She further observed that officials from the embassy are still positioned at the border to welcome and aid Nigerians choosing to exit the country.

“Willing Nigerians being escorted across the Armenian border by officials of the Nigerian embassy in Iran for safe passage. No Nigerian in Iran has been affected by the war as officials remain at the border to receive all who want to leave,” she wrote.

This is a result of the ongoing military strikes involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
