Iran: Govt provides update on evacuation of Nigerians, makes clarifications on ‘stranded’ citizens

Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar has refuted claims circulating on social media that Nigerians have been left stranded in Iran amid rising regional tensions.

In a statement released Saturday in Abuja by Ministry spokesperson Mr. Kimiebi Ebienfa, Tuggar described the circulating reports as “misleading,” “false,” and lacking any factual basis.

He affirmed that Nigeria’s embassy in Tehran remains operational and is actively prioritizing the protection and well-being of Nigerian nationals residing in Iran.

Addressing rumors that the embassy had shut down due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and Israel, the minister clarified that although regular operations have been disrupted by persistent security threats and airstrikes in Tehran, embassy personnel are continuing their duties remotely to ensure uninterrupted assistance.

Tuggar further revealed that the Nigerian mission is currently coordinating with Armenian authorities to explore evacuation routes via Yerevan, should the security situation worsen.

He urged Nigerians in Iran to maintain communication with designated community coordinators, monitor timely updates through the local Eitaa messaging platform, and utilize the embassy’s official emergency contact lines and email addresses made publicly available.

“The ministry remains vigilant in monitoring the situation and will continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard the interests of Nigerians worldwide,” the statement concluded.
