The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami have been charged by Kebbi State’s All Progressives Congress (APC) with supporting political thugs who are to blame for the recent violence in the state.
Yahaya Sarki, Governor Nasir Idris’s Special Advisor on Media and Publicity, made the accusation in a statement on Tuesday.
The APC claims that during Malami’s recent visit to Birnin Kebbi, thugs purportedly belonging to the ADC assaulted the area, attacked the party’s secretariat, and vandalized billboards featuring Governor Idris and President Bola Tinubu.
According to the party, the assailants also shot people and destroyed campaign posters, terrorizing the locals.
The APC urged security services to look into and bring charges against the offenders, denouncing the act as an effort to upend Kebbi’s long-standing tradition of peaceful politics.
The violence that ensued, according to APC supporters and locals, contradicted the ADC’s insistence that Malami’s journey to the state was for a condolence mission.
According to witnesses, several of the thugs were loaded with lethal weapons and were imported from nearby states.
Political analysts are alarmed by the situation and caution that Kebbi, which has always been recognized for its nonviolent politics, might be devolving into violence in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
In order to rebuild communities’ trust and prevent more violence, security authorities have been instructed to step up their investigations into the occurrences.
