Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has given Nigerians the assurance that the recent wave of senators from Kebbi who have defected to the ruling party will be handled amicably in accordance with the party’s constitution and established procedures.
After bringing the departing lawmakers to meet with President Bola Tinubu on Friday, Ganduje told reporters at the Presidential Villa in Abuja that the APC is still an organized and disciplined organization that can easily accept new members.
“Our constitution is very clear about this, and beyond that, we have the political dexterity to manage such affairs,” Ganduje said.
“So, I assure you there will be a smooth integration.”
The meeting came after Yahaya Abubakar Abdullahi (Kebbi North), Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South), and Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), who were all elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), decided to defect to the APC.
In the upcoming days, the Senate floor will announce the senators’ official desertion, Ganduje disclosed.
“By Tuesday, you will see what will happen in the Red Chamber,” he said.
Ganduje called the defections strategic, claiming they were the result of weeks of behind-the-scenes discussions and demonstrated the growing trust in President Tinubu’s APC leadership.
“This is part of President Tinubu’s vision that the APC must strengthen itself democratically to broaden our base – not just in numbers, but in quality and capacity,” he stated.
He went on to say that President Tinubu had approved of the senators’ decision to join the party and had applauded their decision.
In response to worries that the spike in defections may push Nigeria closer to a one-party regime, Ganduje brushed the worries off as baseless.
“A one-party state is not imposed; it emerges when people freely choose where they believe governance works best. If other parties see the positive impact of APC leadership and choose to join us, that is democracy at work,” he said.
“China is one of the strongest economies and is a one-party system. We are not advocating for that here, but if Nigerians, through their choices, move in that direction, we cannot quarrel with it.”
He also criticized Nigeria’s disjointed political system, arguing that having too many parties can make it difficult to rule effectively. “Too many cooks spoil the soup; too many political parties spoil governance,” he said.
Reiterating the APC’s dedication to democratic principles, Ganduje promised that each new member would be accepted into the party’s expansive leadership structure.
As the Tinubu administration enters its second year in power, the APC has recently seen a steady stream of defections from opposition parties at the federal and state levels, strengthening its hold on national politics.
