Former Niger Delta militant Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, and ex-leader of the now-defunct Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, has said that he will no longer back Yoruba politicians, stating that they have betrayed him and the Ijaw people.
Asari-Dokubo announced his new political affiliation with Northern politicians in a video posted on social media on Monday. He characterized them as courteous and consistent, in contrast to their Yoruba counterparts.
“The Yorubas have betrayed us. After all we did, they turned their backs on us,” he said.
Asari-Dokubo reflected on previous coalitions and voiced disappointment that the Ijaw’s sacrifices for southern solidarity had not been returned.
He also cited past elections and conflicts over governance as instances in which the Ijaw stood up for the South only to be deserted.
“I felt apologetic for our fathers who were not wrong in forming alliances with the North. As young men, we will now continue that same alliance,” he stated.
Moving forward, Asari-Dokubo vowed “As of today, I will now work, work, work and form alliance with the North to crush out opposition,” giving the South-West’s perceived lack of devotion and current political realignments as justifications for his choice.
