The ongoing conflict surrounding the administration of Government College Umuahia (GCU) by the Fisher Educational Development Trust (FEDT) has escalated, amid claims that new trustees have been appointed under the leadership of Okwe Ilieze Nwodo.

Chukwudi Onwudinanti, an alumnus of the college, brought the matter before the Abia State House of Assembly, raising concerns over the sharp increase in tuition fees reportedly exceeding N1 million for what is meant to be a public institution.

In his petition, Onwudinanti argued that the inflated fees have made it nearly impossible for academically gifted students from less privileged backgrounds to gain admission into the school, alongside other grievances.

In response to the complaint, the Assembly’s Committee on Public Petitions convened in March 2025, summoning those involved to present their perspectives. After listening to both sides, the committee advised all parties to refrain from taking further actions while the House deliberated on a just resolution.

Despite this directive, Onwudinanti’s legal representative, Mr. Ugochukwu Zik, has informed the Assembly that the Fisher Educational Development Trust branches in the USA and UK have allegedly moved forward with the announcement of a new board—an action said to contradict the legislative order.

“Regrettably, while the National President of the GCUOBA issued a statement that the GCUOBA has suspended its intended inauguration of the new FEDT trustees and shall abide by the orders of the ABHA, the FEDT and its apologists in the USA and UK kept boasting that the ABHA is not a court of law that could stop her from inaugurating its new trustees,” Zik said.

Zik described the alleged disregard for the Assembly’s directive as a challenge to its authority.

However, during the March hearing held by the Committee on Public Petitions, Uchenna Okoro Kalu, the Co-Chairman of the committee, along with members of FEDT represented by Onyema Nkele, refuted several accusations made in Onwudinanti’s petition.
