Jigawa varsity decries trespass, theft by host community

The Federal University Dutse (FUD) has raised concerns over frequent incidents of trespassing, theft, and damage to its facilities by individuals residing in the surrounding community.

Prof. Abdulkadim Sabo, the Vice Chancellor, addressed these issues during a pre-convocation briefing held on Tuesday in the University’s Senate Chamber.

He noted that although the institution has made deliberate efforts to support both its immediate and neighboring communities through various outreach programs, such disruptions are putting the campus at risk.

“In our profound act of corporate responsibility, we extended health services to 17 neighbouring host communities thus shifting from campus-centred care to community-centred impact.

“We provide free obstetric ultrasound scanning to pregnant women, conduct house to house vaccination campaigns and provide mobile outreach to orphanages and correctional centres,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor further mentioned the introduction of two emergency hotlines, aimed at ensuring quick ambulance dispatch and continuous medical consultation.

He explained that some individuals—either students living off-campus or members of the community—intentionally break the school’s perimeter walls for easier passage, without considering the consequences on campus security.

Sabo also expressed concern about stray animals entering the campus and damaging vegetation.

He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to boosting campus security and called on members of the local community to respect the university’s boundaries.

In addition, he outlined other pressing issues, such as the institution’s struggle to cover its utility expenses, especially in light of minimal operational funding and rising electricity costs.

Another area of concern, according to Sabo, is the absence of a standard fire engine and firefighting equipment, which he identified as a critical requirement for the institution.

The Vice Chancellor concluded by announcing that a total of 4,277 students are set to graduate during the university’s combined 8th and 9th convocation ceremony scheduled for Friday.
