Abuja floods: Residents point fingers as heavy downpour disrupts city

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, have expressed anger and concern after heavy rainfall caused flooding in several parts of Abuja.

The flooding has also triggered criticism of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, with some residents accusing the administration of failing to properly maintain the city’s drainage infrastructure and protect the Abuja Master Plan.

A video currently circulating on X showed parts of Wuse 2, including Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, the bridge close to City Park, a plaza and several vehicles surrounded and submerged by floodwater.

Other parts of the capital, including Wuse Zone 1, Katampe, Darrumi, Gwarinpa, Gaduwa and Gudu, were also affected by the heavy flooding.

The downpour reportedly left motorists and residents stranded in some locations until the water eventually receded.

The development generated reactions on X, with several users attributing the worsening flooding situation to alleged poor management of Abuja’s original development plan.

An X user, Chude, wrote: “Abuja is sinking. The planned capital of Nigeria, one of three purpose-built capitals in West Africa and the newest there, was never meant to flood. Standards were high, and every detail was considered in the master plan.

“But today, Katampe, Wuse, Garki, Lugbe, Galadimawa and others are flooding. What is going on? What happened to Abuja?

“Major drainages are blocked, sewage spills out daily, canals have been narrowed for estates, and green areas have been sold to estate companies by this government.

“This is the story of the capital that was never meant to flood.”

Another X user, Everest, also blamed the current administration for what he described as the deterioration of Abuja’s original planning structure.

“Abuja had a master plan until Obio-Akpor Hitler and his boys entered the city. Now, there is flooding everywhere.”

Mohammed Jummal, in his reaction on X, described the situation as alarming and called for urgent intervention.

“The flooding in Abuja should be a serious concern for all of us. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen it this bad, especially with flooding now occurring in areas where we’ve never experienced it before. This is worrying and deserves urgent attention.”

Theo Abu Agada also accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, administration of contributing to the flooding problem through alleged development of Abuja’s green areas.

“This is the evil APC has done to our city. We have been complaining about Wike selling our green areas to developers, and some people here say we were hating on him.”
