The Reconciliation Committee of the Rainbow Coalition has assured members of the political group that nobody will face victimisation or discrimination over previous political differences.
The assurance comes amid ongoing efforts to restore unity and peace within the political space in Rivers State.
The committee gave the commitment on Sunday after holding its second meeting with Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, at the Government House in Port Harcourt within a period of about two weeks.
According to the committee, every member will be treated fairly and respectfully as the reconciliation process continues, irrespective of past political disagreements.
The chairman of the committee, Senator Magnus Abe, explained that the meeting was aimed at allowing previously divided political leaders to deliberate on ways to achieve lasting peace and reconciliation.
Abe told journalists after the meeting that the committee had conducted a series of engagements aimed at developing a framework that would enable members of the political family to work together.
He said providing the explanation was important to help Rivers residents understand the direction of the reconciliation process and its possible implications for the state.
“I’m sure that Rivers people will be very curious to understand exactly what we have been talking about.
“So, I know that this will be very good news for all Rivers people who are interested in the unity, progress and prosperity of Rivers State.
“We are all in agreement and we have made very good progress.
“Our coming together signals a significant shift in the political atmosphere of the state and we believe that all well-meaning Rivers people will be very happy to see that finally, the peace that all Rivers people crave for is here,” he said.
The South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr Samuel Nwanosike, who was part of the delegation, expressed appreciation to Governor Fubara for giving the committee the opportunity to meet and engage with him in a brotherly atmosphere.
Nwanosike described both meetings held by the committee as successful.
He said the outcome of the engagements, “shows clearly to the people of Rivers State that the family is back; sincerely back and soon, they will see the working of the Rainbow Coalition.”
He further assured Rivers residents that the Rainbow Coalition would ensure that they benefit from the dividends of democracy.
Another stakeholder, Chief Ambrose Nwuzi, said members of the group who support Governor Fubara had agreed to pursue peace, maintaining that reconciliation remained the best option.
He described the political disagreements of the past as part of the normal challenges that occur in human societies.
Other members of the delegation included the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State, Kingsley Ogundu Chinda, among other stakeholders.
The reconciliation committee was established by the Rainbow Coalition led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, following Governor Fubara’s decision to return to his former political family.
