Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, recently convened a meeting with the suspended Speaker of the House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, alongside other dissatisfied state legislators.

Multiple sources confirmed on Thursday evening that the gathering, which took place in Abuja, ended on a positive note, with Fubara holding Amaewhule’s hand as they exchanged jokes and laughter.

This meeting is believed to be the first concrete effort aimed at mending relations between the governor and the lawmakers.

A confidential source who spoke to The Nation described the discussion as constructive but mentioned that a broader peace conference is in the works to iron out the terms of reconciliation.

“The suspended Governor is determined to make peace. He has started the real engagement,” the source said.

Fubara was suspended on March 19 following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, a decision later ratified by the National Assembly to quell the worsening political unrest.

In response, the president appointed former Naval Chief, Vice-Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas, as the state administrator for an initial six-month term to facilitate reconciliation among the feuding political figures.

While Fubara had previously engaged with his former patron, Nyesom Wike, and President Tinubu over the Rivers crisis, this recent meeting with the lawmakers marks the most meaningful step toward genuine reconciliation to date.

Wike has repeatedly emphasized that for reconciliation to be effective, Fubara must meet with all aggrieved parties, especially members of the House of Assembly, whose salaries and allowances he allegedly withheld for more than two years.
