Edo Assembly: Major shake-up as Speaker Agbebaku resigns

The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has stepped down from his position.

ZINGTIE reports that Agbebaku announced his resignation during a brief plenary session of the House on Monday, August 17, 2026.

The sitting lasted less than 30 minutes before the lawmakers proceeded with a number of leadership changes.

Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo I Constituency, was subsequently elected as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.

The leadership changes also affected several other principal officers of the House.

Jonathan Ibhamawu, representing Esan West Constituency, was removed as Majority Leader and replaced by Ojiezele Osezua Sunday, who represents Esan South-East Constituency.

Addeh Emankhu Isibor, representing Esan North-East 1 Constituency, was also removed as Deputy Majority Leader.

He was replaced by Inegbeboh Ojie Eugene, who has now assumed the position.

In the minority caucus, Natasha Osawaru Irobosa, representing Egor Constituency under the National Democratic Congress, NDC, emerged as the new Minority Leader.

She replaced Charity Iguodala, who represents Ovia North-East 1 Constituency.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, was originally elected to the House on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

However, he defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in January 2025.

His resignation and the subsequent changes in the leadership structure have now triggered a fresh political development within the Edo State House of Assembly.
