French defender Jules Kounde has surprised many by leaving out fellow countrymen Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele in his choice for this year’s Ballon d’Or winner.
The highly anticipated award ceremony is set to take place on September 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. According to Kounde, his pick for the prestigious prize is none other than his Barcelona teammate, Lamine Yamal.
Although both Dembele and Mbappe were included in the recently announced 30-man shortlist by France Football, Kounde opted to back Yamal, whose performances have drawn widespread praise.
All three players had a remarkable 2025 season, playing pivotal roles for both club and country and contributing to several major title wins.
When asked if Yamal should take home the Ballon d’Or, Kounde responded in an interview with Le10Sport, “Lamine Yamal for the Ballon d’Or? You’re putting me in a tricky situation, but I think he deserves it.”
Kounde also spoke highly of his on-pitch chemistry with the young forward and praised Yamal’s impact in matches.
The 18-year-old Spanish international recorded 18 goals and 25 assists in 55 appearances across all competitions last season.
His contributions helped Barcelona clinch the LaLiga title, as well as victories in both the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de España.
