The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Academic and Non-Academic Staff Unions in Bauchi State-owned tertiary institutions has suspended its indefinite strike.
JAC Chairman Abubakar Ahmed announced the suspension at an emergency congress held at Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP) on Thursday. The suspension will last for four weeks, from January 9 to February 5, 2025.
The strike, declared on January 2, 2025, was over the Bauchi State government’s failure to implement the new minimum wage for workers in its tertiary institutions. However, following the intervention of the Bauchi State House of Assembly and other stakeholders, JAC has resolved to suspend the strike.
The affected institutions include Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Adamu Tafawa Balewa College of Education, Kangere, and Bauchi State College of Agriculture, among others.
JAC has laid out conditions for the suspension, including a demand that the state government demonstrate commitment to resolving outstanding issues within the four-week timeframe and provide assurances that no member will face retaliation for participating in the industrial action.
“Should the government fail to meet these conditions, JAC will be left with no choice but to resume the strike,” Ahmed warned.
