The Accord Party has urged Nigerians to demand accountability from leaders at all levels of government, emphasizing the need for them to deliver the true benefits of democracy to the people.
In a statement endorsed by its National Chairman, Barr. Maxwell Mgbudem, the party expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity facing the nation.
Accord also extended warm greetings to Christians across Nigeria in celebration of this year’s Easter, a period that reflects the suffering, trials, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ a central figure in the Christian faith.
It added that Christ’s triumph over death that ushers a glorious future for believers is a testament that the multifarious challenges facing Nigeria will be surmounted “if we remain in one accord and committed to redirect the ship of the nation to the path of rectitude, development and advancement.”
The party called for patriotism, sacrifice, tolerance, love and effective leadership.
It noted that the provision of security and welfare for the people is “the essence of democratic governance. There is no substitute for progressive leadership that meets the needs of the people in whom sovereignty resides.”
Furthermore, Accord said it is “saddened by the spate of insecurity in the country” adding that the government must “be decisive and firm in crushing terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, ritual killings and killer-herdsmen.”
The statement added, “For years Nigeria has become a killing field due to lack of political will to tackle these criminal elements in the society. The consequence is the emergence of new terror groups.
“Our hearts bleed over the daily killing of innocent citizens in their fatherland. Governments are elected to provide security, maintain public order and safeguard the interests of the people.
“It is unjust and immoral to abdicate on these crucial constitutional responsibilities. We can’t standby and watch fellow compatriots being slaughtered daily while elected public officers engage in partisan politics and pay lip service to the sufferings of the people.
“Security agencies should be well equipped and motivated to discharge their constitutional mandates. This is the least the masses expect from responsible governments.
“As a major stakeholder in the political process, Accord will continue to champion good governance that will foster sustainable democracy and development in Nigeria.
“Let us use the Easter celebration to renew our faith in God and the nation. With God on our side, Nigeria will be great and prosperous again.”
