Be ready to give us information on how your resources are used – EFCC to Nigerians

Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has urged Nigerians in local government to always be prepared and eager to provide the anti-graft organization with information about how their funds are being utilized.

According to a statement released on Saturday by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, Olukoyede made the request during a two-day workshop that the Kaduna State Ministry of Local Government had arranged.

The head of the EFCC, speaking through Aisha Abubakar, the Acting Zonal Commander for Kaduna, stressed the importance of cooperation in the fight against financial and economic crimes and reaffirmed his commitment to focusing more on the preventive approach when addressing corrupt practices.

He added that implementing preventive measures is always cost-effective and that minimizing incentives for corruption is the best method to combat crime and criminality.

He remarked that to improve local government administration in Nigeria, deliberate efforts should be made to support budgetary restraint, transparency, and effective resource management at the local level.

According to him, “Nigerians at the grassroots should be willing and ready to offer information to the EFCC at all times on how their resources are being used. This brings us to the need for whistleblowing. They should be ready to join the EFCC in exposing corrupt practices in their midst.

“We will emphasize more on preventive measures against corruption. International best practices in the fight against graft put preventive frameworks on the front burner.”

Olukoyede also advised local government officials on how to prevent financial misappropriation and theft in order to promote economic development in their communities.

Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, the deputy governor of Kaduna State, urged local government employees to uphold financial discipline in accordance with global best practices and abstain from any misconduct that could jeopardize the financial system.
