It has been reported that presumed armed herdsmen have carried out another assault on the Yelewata community within Benue State’s Guma Local Government Area, resulting in injuries to two residents.

The community in question had previously endured a catastrophic attack on June 13, 2025, resulting in over 200 deaths and compelling numerous survivors to become Internally Displaced Persons., IDP Camps.

A local leader, who asked to remain unnamed, disclosed that the assailants invaded the area on Sunday afternoon with their livestock and clashed with soldiers assigned to protect the community.

According to him, “The attack happened in the afternoon when the herders were openly grazing toward Yelewata town. Soldiers moved to intercept them, and when the herders realised they were about to be apprehended, they began running back,” he said.

He clarified that one of the victims, a woman, was shot in the hand, while another individual suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) promptly treated both individuals and evacuated them to Makurdi for further medical attention.

“They are still alive, and we are grateful for the quick response of BSEMA,” the source said.

Furthermore, the community leader indicated that the event took place only four days after the state government provided farmers in the region with enhanced agricultural inputs to help boost food production in the planting season.

He voiced worry that a renewed wave of attacks might obstruct agricultural activities and stop residents from reaping the benefits of the distributed inputs.

“Our people are worried that the renewed activities of armed herdsmen may prevent them from accessing their farms and utilising the provided inputs.

“We fear for our lives every day. How can we farm when armed men roam freely around our farms?” he lamented.

It was not possible to elicit a response from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, as of the time this report was written; calls and messages went unanswered.
