The Southeast geopolitical zone’s top three female politicians in Nigeria have been heralded due to the corruption controversy involving Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Betta Edu.
Betta Edu drew criticism after discovering a document that showed how she gave the Accountant-General of the Federation instructions to move hundreds of millions of naira into a personal account.
The most concerning revelation was presented last week by Oluwatoyin Madein, the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), who stated that Edu had attempted to transfer money into a personal account illegally.
However, another document, dated November 2023, reveals that the beleaguered humanitarian minister was paid for plane tickets to a Kogi airport that doesn’t exist.
SaharaReporters claims that despite Kogi State’s lack of an airport, the document indicates that monies have been allocated for flight tickets and airport taxis for Beta Edu and her colleagues travelling from Abuja to that state.
According to the magazine, the monies were granted before the 2023 governorship elections on November 11th.
Online trends followed the names of Prof. Dora Akunyil, Dr. Oby Ezekwesilli, and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in response to these incidents.
Findings show that Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the finance minister for four years under Goodluck Jonathan and three years under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, had no corruption scandals throughout either of her terms in office.
Dr Oby Ezekwesilli was the Head of the Budget Monitoring and Price Intelligence Unit, the Minister of Solid Minerals, and the Minister of Education from 1999 to 2007. Also, there was no corruption controversy during her eight years in office.
Professor Dora Akunyil served as NAFDAC’s Director General and then as Information Minister from 2001 until 2010. She gave a flawless, meritocratic service.
In the meantime, President Bola Tinubu has insisted on a comprehensive investigation of the Betta Edu-led Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The sacked PDP Rivers State Chairman, Chukwuemeka Aaron, had filed the motion on behalf of those purportedly elected as state executives. Also included were Oye Fubara Igenewari, representing those elected as local government executives, and ThankGod Beke, representing ward executives As interested parties, they asked the court for permission to appeal the ruling that removed them from office. The PDP, the original suit's respondent, has already appealed the decision that declared the congresses invalid, thus Justice Stephen Jumbo rejected the motion in his decision on Friday. The PDP's state, local, and ward executives, led by Aaron, were fired by the same court on January 13, 2025, under the presidence of Justice Jumbo, after the congresses that elected them were deemed invalid.
