Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has announced a groundbreaking commitment to improve health and development in Africa. Speaking at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Gates revealed that the majority of the $200 billion his foundation will disburse over the next two decades will be allocated to addressing challenges on the African continent.
“I recently made a commitment that my wealth will be given away over the next 20 years,” Gates said. “The majority of that funding will be spent on helping you address challenges here in Africa.” He emphasized that Africa would receive the largest share of the funding, citing the continent’s potential and urgent needs
Gates praised African governments that prioritize the health and well-being of their citizens, calling for more investment in primary healthcare. “Investing in primary healthcare has the greatest impact on health and wellbeing,” he said. “Strong maternal and child nutrition support in the early years of life helps break cycles of poverty and disease.”
This pledge underscores Gates’ commitment to supporting Africa’s development and improving the lives of its people. By investing in primary healthcare and addressing pressing challenges, the Gates Foundation aims to make a lasting impact on the continent’s health and prosperity.
