Blackout hits Ghana, Benin, Togo over gas supply disruption from Nigeria

A persistent disruption in Nigeria’s gas supply is causing power disruptions in some regions of Ghana, the Republic of Benin, and Togo.

There is complete darkness in Ghana, the Republic of Benin, and Togo’s major cities.

This situation coincides with the recent announcement by the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited in Accra, Ghana, that the volumes of gas available for transit are declining.

WAPCO announced last Wednesday in a statement that one of its Nigerian gas producers was doing minor maintenance. The gas company reportedly closed its facilities for three weeks to do maintenance.

As a result, WAPCO has less petrol available to transfer to its clients in Ghana, Togo, and Benin.

“The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited regrets to announce that it is experiencing a drop in gas volumes available for transportation due to ongoing maintenance works by one of its gas producers in Nigeria.”

“One of the producers of the natural gas WAPCO which transports from Nigeria has shut down its facility for three-week maintenance, resulting in a decrease of gas available for WAPCO to transport to customers in Togo, Benin and Ghana. The current situation is entirely out of WAPCO’s control.”

The Ghana Grid Company Limited and the Electricity Company of Ghana have notified consumers of electricity in the nation that certain locations have already reached complete darkness.

“Wish to inform the public that due to a reduction in gas supply from Nigeria since Wednesday 12th June 2024 some areas across the country have experienced interruption in power supply,” Ghana Grid Company Limited and the Electricity Company of Ghana stated in a statement they jointly signed.

The company said that a scarcity of gas caused the outage because a Nigerian gas supplier was scheduled to perform maintenance work for three weeks.

“The West Africa Gas Pipeline Company, in a statement, has explained that the reduction in gas supply was due to maintenance works being undertaken by a gas supplier in Nigeria and is projected to last three weeks,” the statement added.
