A violent altercation between members of the Global Methodist Church (GMC) and the United Methodist Church in Nigeria (UMCN) in Taraba State has resulted in the confirmed deaths of three people.
One faction allegedly opened a church edifice for services on Sunday, sparking a problem in the Karim-Lamido local government council.
According to Abdullahi Usman, the state police public relations officer, the event happened on Sunday in the Karim-Lamido council’s Munga Dasso village.
“There was a crisis in Karim-Lamido Local Government Council, which led to the killing of three people,” he said.
Six people have been taken into custody, he continued, and security personnel have been sent in to stop additional bloodshed.
A protracted leadership disagreement between the UMCN and the GMC, which recently became a breakaway faction, was seen to be the root of the conflict.
The state government had already sealed church properties throughout the region to reduce tensions, but the incident on Sunday rekindled emotions.
Speaking to our reporter, some worshippers expressed their dissatisfaction with the government’s inability to address the ongoing situation, which they feel is endangering the state’s peace and security.
