Boko Haram militants have attacked Buni Yadi, the hometown of Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, resulting in the deaths of two sons of a police officer and the destruction of their home by fire.

The attack occurred in the Shuwari Baban Layi area around 1:00 am on Monday.

Local sources report that the insurgents targeted the home of Malam Jibrin, a police inspector and crime officer at the Buni Yadi Police Station. Jibrin reportedly escaped by scaling the fence of his house, which led the attackers to kill his two sons, aged 25 and 27. They then set their bodies and the house on fire.

A local vigilante, who spoke on condition of anonymity, suggested that the attackers may have been operating from the Buk and Talala areas, roughly 30 kilometers east of Buni Yadi.

“The insurgents arrived around 1:00 a.m. and operated uninterrupted until 1:54 a.m., causing widespread panic,” a source told reporters.

The vigilante further claimed that the same area was the site of a recent ambush where Boko Haram killed an army commandant, several soldiers, and vigilantes.

Residents, already living in fear, say the security situation continues to deteriorate.

“People can no longer sleep with their eyes closed,” said Muhammad Garba, a resident. “With what is happening on the roads and within the town, nowhere is safe.”

As of now, neither the Nigerian military nor local authorities have issued an official statement regarding the attack.
