The military of the Benin Republic reports that about a dozen troops, including the ringleaders of the abortive coup attempt, have been taken into custody.

There were reportedly thirteen persons in custody.

The final detainee is reportedly a former member of the armed forces, although all but one of the suspects are active military personnel.

According to ZINGTIE, the arrests followed a group of military commanders’ Sunday morning announcement on Benin’s national television that President Patrice Talon had been removed and that all official institutions had been dissolved.

The officers claimed to have taken control and established themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation.

But according to the presidency, loyalist forces are reestablishing order and President Talon is safe. It claimed that a small group with little power was responsible for the event.

“This is a small group of people who only control the television. The regular army is regaining control. The city and the country are completely secure,” the presidency said.
