BREAKING: Court grants special privilege to Muslim students in University of Ibadan School

Female Muslim students at the University of Ibadan International School, Ibadan (ISI) now have the option to wear hijab on top of their school uniforms, according to an Oyo State High Court ruling in the state capital of Ibadan.

The court, presided over by Justice Moshood Ishola, rendered its decision on Wednesday afternoon.

One of the nation’s state universities, the University of Ibadan, owns and manages the secondary school.

According to ZINGTIE, the University of Ibadan International School in Ibadan initiated an argument in November 2018 regarding the hijab worn by female Muslim students. The school refused to allow some of the female Muslim students to wear the hijab over their uniforms.

The school, the University of Ibadan, and several of the organization’s top administrators were hauled before the courts by the female Muslim students and their parents.

Faridah Akerele, Ikhlas Badiru, Mahmuda Babarinde, Raheemah Akinlusi, Imam Akinoso, Hamdallah Olosunde, Aliyyah Adebayo, Moriddiyah Yekinni, and Fareedah Moshood were among the students.

In his ruling, the judge stated that he had based his decision on earlier Supreme Court rulings.

He believed that since the school is a public entity, Muslim female students should be able to wear the headscarf.

He went on, saying that the school had no authority to deprive students of their basic human rights.

Ishola stated that he based his entire decision on the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution as well as other charters, which grant freedom of religion and association.
