Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, was taken to the Federal High Court in Abuja for arraignment, but his attorneys were not there.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, summoned him before the court so that his plea could be considered in connection with a fresh accusation.

Drama, however, broke out when Judge Emeka Nwite learned that the prisoner had no legal counsel and the accusations were ready to be read to him.

Bello informed the court that he was unable to contact any of his attorneys because he learned about the arraignment late Thursday evening.

Although Bello’s arraignment was demanded by the EFCC, which was represented by Kemi Pinheiro, Justice Nwite denied the motion, stating that it would equate to breach of Bello’s fundamental rights to fair hearing.

Justice Nwite stated that he was aware of the defendant’s assertion that he learned of the arraignment late on Thursday evening.

In a succinct decision, Justice Nwite denied the December 13 arraignment.

The judge ordered Bello to remain in the custody of the EFCC until this day.

In order to allow Bello’s lawyers to appear in court, Justice Nwite further mandated that they receive hearing notice.
