Iran petitions UN security council over alleged United States military threats

The Iranian government has officially filed a complaint with the United Nations Security Council, alleging that the United States has made direct military threats and violated international law.

In a letter dated February 19, 2026, Iran’s Ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, accused Washington of violating the UN Charter by publicly threatening to use force against Tehran. The letter was addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and James Kariuki, the President of the Council.

The communication indicated that the complaint was triggered by a social media post from February 18 that is attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump.

The president reportedly suggested in the post that if Iran refused to “make a deal,” the United States might contemplate using military facilities at Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford for a potential strike.

The comments were described by Tehran as a blatant infringement of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which bans threats or acts of violence against any state’s territorial integrity or political autonomy.

Iranian officials contended that the rhetoric, along with what they referred to as a continuous accumulation of American military assets in the region, increases the danger of confrontation.

“The situation must not be viewed as mere political rhetoric,” the letter warned, cautioning that ongoing military deployments and public threats could destabilize the Middle East and jeopardize global peace.

Iran restated its dedication to diplomatic engagement, notwithstanding the allegations. Iravani stated that Tehran is committed to settling disagreements via dialogue and is engaging in nuclear talks sincerely.

He stated that the purpose of the discussions is to achieve the elimination of what Iran refers to as unlawful unilateral sanctions and to clarify matters related to its nuclear program, all in accordance with the framework of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

According to the letter, a balanced agreement is still possible if the U.S. enters negotiations with respect for international law and UN Charter principles.

Iran urged the Security Council to take on its duty of upholding global peace by pressing the United States to stop what Iran characterized as illegal threats.

It also asked for the letter to be distributed as an official document of the Council.

Tehran cautioned that it would invoke its right to self-defense as per Article 51 of the UN Charter if assaulted, while asserting that it does not aim for conflict.

It stated that, in that scenario, U.S. military bases and assets in the area could be viewed as legitimate targets, with Washington being held responsible for any ensuing escalation.
