Due to increased security concerns stoked by reports of alleged U.S. military movement in regions of West Africa, the government of Chad has announced the immediate closing of its border with Nigeria.
President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno ordered a military lockdown on the Nigerian border on Monday, according to military officials in N’Djamena. This came after information revealed that terrorist actors from Northern Nigeria were preparing to enter Chad.
Zagazola Makama claims that all units are now fully prepared and that Chadian troops and armored vehicles have been sent to vital routes from Nigeria.”No armed group or foreign force will be allowed to enter Chadian soil under any disguise,” according to reports, President Déby issued.
The border closure coincides with escalating tensions in the region and conjecture on the United States’ purported military actions in West Africa and the Sahel.
According to security experts, Chad’s move is a preventative measure meant to safeguard its borders and stop extremists from infiltrating the country in an attempt to take advantage of the current turmoil in the area.
