BREAKING: Edo deputy governor, Philip Shaibu receives impeachment notice

The state deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, is the target of an impeachment process that members of the Edo State Assembly have started.

The House’s plenary session on Wednesday saw the reading of the petition for the deputy governor’s impeachment, according to ZINGTIE.

When reading the impeachment petition in plenary, Majority Leader Charity Aiguobarueghian stated that 21 of the 24 members had signed it against the deputy governor.

The petition was dated March 5, 2024, according to Aiguobarueghian, who also mentioned that more members over the two-thirds threshold outlined in Section 188 (2a) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s constitution signed it.

He added that Blessing Agbebaku, the Speaker of the House, was the intended recipient of the petition.

According to the Speaker, who acknowledged receiving the petition was based on two grounds that were kept private.

However, the House gave the deputy governor seven days to reply to the petition.

The Speaker gave Yahaya Omogbai, the house clerk, instructions to serve Shaibu with the impeachment notice.

Shaibu’s impeachment notice may have something to do with his confrontation with state governor Godwin Obaseki, which ended with him losing the state’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial primary.

Recall that Shaibu had alleged a plot to impeach him from office, stating his desire to become governor was the cause of the plot.

He was elected as the PDP candidate in a concurrent primary election held in his hometown of Benin City, the state capital.

At the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, another PDP primary exercise was held, with Asue Ighodalo declared the winner.
